Honduran Independence Day was celebrated by the school on September 15.The day began with a solemn ceremony that explained the importance of the Honduran flag and the people who helped in the process of independence. Students led the assembled group in singing the National Anthem and reciting the Oath to the Country and Pledge to the Flag. In preparation for the event, the secondary students decorated mural that addressed current topics of interest in Honduras and the entire school community voted to select a winner. The elementary students decorated floats and displays to share with the other students, parents and teachers during the celebration. The day concluded with performances by national artists, playing of traditional games, and enjoyment of typical Honduran food.
On October 23, the entire school community turned out to celebrate United Nations Day. Parents, students and teachers had been hard at work arranging displays to recognize and educate the rest of the community about their home country-including food, customs, food, traditional clothing, food, dances, food---notice the emphasis on FOOD! The secondary students were given a questionnaire from their Social Studies teacher to learn significant facts about each country. In all, we had 18 countries represented. After visiting the country booths and tables, everyone gathered in the gym for entertainment from a variety of countries. We all learned a lot, and a good time was had by all!
